New Expanded Coverage for Some Cancer Patients

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have issued a final national coverage determination (NCD) to expand coverage for initial testing with PET for Medicare beneficiaries who are diagnosed with and treated for most solid tumor cancers.  This new coverage demonstrates the intrinsic medical value of PET and will allow patients greater access to PET imaging to guide their care.  PET imaging plays an important role in diagnosing, staging, restaging and monitoring treatment for many cancers.

Since 2005, Medicare coverage of PET scans for diagnosing some forms of cancer and guiding treatment has been tied to a requirement that providers collect clinical information about how the scans have affected doctors’ treatment decisions. This information was gathered through the National Oncologic PET Registry (NOPR) observational study.

The new coverage will include Initial Treatment Strategy for solid tumors of the ovary, brain, small cell lung, soft tissue sarcoma, pancreas, testes, thyroid, myeloma, and all other solid tumors.  Subsequent Treatment Strategy for solid tumors of the ovary, cervix and myeloma.

Medicare patients will now have greater access to cutting-edge medical technologies and treatments.  This decision is a very important step to help cancer patients nationwide.
